County Roscommon is one of Ireland's 12 inland counties with a population
of 52,000. County Roscommon has borders with counties Leitrim, Longford, Westmeath,
Offaly, Galway, Mayo and Sligo. Its main urban centre is the town of Roscommon with other
towns located at Boyle, Castlerea, Elphin and Strokestown. County Roscommon is mainly a
flat county with fertile agricultural land, river meadow and peatlands. The River Shannon
and its lakes form the eastern boundary of the county. In the north, hills rise to 1,385
feet in the county border areas. The Curlew Hills and the Slievebawn Hills in the
north-west also provide good walking opportunities. The main tourist attractions and places to visit include Roscommon Heritage and Genealogical Centre, The Church of Ireland Church, Roscommon County Museum, Elphin Windmill, King House, Clonalis House, Strokestown Park House (including Famine Museum), Lough Key Forest Park, The Old Schoolhouse Museum and Boyle Abbey. |
