County Offaly is one of the Republic of Ireland's 12 inland counties
with a population of 59,000. Its main town is Tullamore with other towns located at Birr,
Banagher, Clara and Edenderry. County Offaly shares borders with counties Westmeath,
Meath, Kildare, Laois, Tipperary, Galway and Roscommon. County Offaly is characterised by
its mainly flat land with occasional hills and the Heathery Slieve Bloom Mountains with
their valleys. The River Shannon forms a natural boundary to the county in the west and
provides the angler with opportunities not to be missed. Perhaps one of the most
famous sites to be seen in County Offaly is Birr Castle. A telescope, which was the
largest in the world for many decades, was constructed in the 1840s by the Third Earl of
Rosse. It has now been restored to a fully functional state. County Offaly has a rich history with many places for the visitor to see. The main tourist attractions and places to visit include West Offaly Railway Bog Tour, Birr Castle, Charleville Castle, Tullamore Dew Heritage Centre, Slieve Bloom Environmental Mountain Park, Leap Castle and Clonmacnoise. |
