County Monaghan is one of the Republic of Ireland's 12 inland
counties with a population of 51,000. Its main town is Monaghan with other larger towns
located at Clones, Iniskeene and Carrickmacross. County Monaghan shares borders with
counties Cavan and Louth and has a large border length with Northern Ireland. It is one of
the smaller counties in the Republic of Ireland. County Monaghan is characterised by many
small hills and lakes making it a very interesting county to travel around for its

opportunity. Patrick Kavanagh, the famous writer has roots in Monaghan and the county is
also famous for its lace making industry - Carrickmacross Lace and Clones Lace. County Monaghan has a rich history with many places for the visitor to see.
