County Louth is situated in the north of the Republic of Ireland with a
population of 92,000. County Louth is the smallest county in Ireland covering just 318
square miles and has borders with counties Monaghan, Meath, and Northern Ireland. Its main
urban centre is Dundalk with other larger towns located at Drogheda, Ardee, Dunleer,
Carlingford and Louth. Much of the county consists of low lying and fertile farmland with
sandy beaches and rocky cliffs along its coastline. In the north of the county are the
more dramatic mountains of the Cooley Peninsula providing a contrast to the rest of the
county. Many historical sites are scattered around the county and fine buildings of
architectural interest are to be found. Festivals such as The Oyster Festival held every
August in Carlingford present interesting events to be enjoyed throughout the year. The main tourist attractions and places to visit include Monasterboice, The County Museum, Saint Peter's Church, Millmount Museum, Proleek Dolmen, Holy Trinity Heritage Centre and Old Mellifont Abbey. |
