County Longford is one of Ireland's 12 inland counties with a population
of 29,000. County Longford is one of the smallest counties in Ireland and has borders with
counties Leitrim, Cavan, Westmeath, and Roscommon. Its main urban centre is Longford with
other larger towns located at Granard, Lanesborough, Abbeylara, Ardagh and Kenagh. County
Longford is mainly a flat county with fertile agricultural land and peatlands. The Irish
peat industry harvests much of its peat from this county which feeds electricity
generating stations and provides heat for homes throughout the country. The west of the
county is bounded by the River Shannon and the idyllic Lough Ree providing ample
opportunity for the keen fisherman. The county is also well known for shooting and hunting
pursuits. St Mel's Cathedral, one of Ireland's most impressive is located in Longford and
is a "must see" during any visit. The main tourist attractions and places to visit include the Bogwood Sculpture Artists, Rathcline Church, the Battle of Ballinamuck Centre, Corlea Trackway Visitor Centre and Ardagh Heritage Village. |
