County Galway is situated in the west coast of Ireland and has borders with counties Clare, Mayo, Roscommon and Offaly. A very popular destination for visitors to Ireland because of its beautiful scenery and long coastline. The county has a population of 189,000. Its main town is Galway with other larger towns located at Tuam, Athenry, Ballinasloe, Loughrea, Gort, Clifden, Kinvara, Oughterard, Headford, Portumna and Oranmore. It is the second largest county in Ireland in terms of geographical area after County Cork. The west of the county is largely made up of rugged countryside culminating with the mountains known as the Twelve Pins. The east gives way to level and more fertile land. Some of the very dramatic coastline in Ireland is to be found on County Galway. County Galway has a rich history with many places for the visitor to see.
