County Armagh covers an area of approximately 680 square kilometres to the
south of Lake Neagh and shares its southern border with the Republic of Ireland. The
population of County Armagh is around 142,00. Armagh is the home of both the Church of
Ireland (Anglican) and the Roman Catholic churches. Industries include textiles, optics,
food processing and agriculture. The southern areas of the county are rugged with the more
fertile agricultural land being in the north. Much fruit , including strawberries and
apples, is grown on the fertile soils of the northern part of the county earning Armagh
the name of "The Garden of Ulster". Slieve Gullion rises to 1,893 feet and
provides a good challenge for keen walkers. The main towns of County Armagh include Armagh City, Loughgall, Tynan, Portadown, Keady and Lurgan. |
